Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where can I get my license and tags?

Licenses may be purchased in Wellington at the Market Square Thriftway grocery store (1100 8th Street) or at the county clerk’s office in the Collingsworth County Courthouse on the town square. Licenses are also available at Market Square Thriftway in Shamrock (205 E. 3rd Street), and at Walmart (2801 Avenue F NW) in Childress. Licenses may also be purchased online at www.tpwd.texas.gov. They will take you to the rifle range to sight in your rifle, give you a hunter welcome packet, and tell you information about your hunt. They will help familiarize you with the area and take you to your hunting stand.

Turkey Hunters will arrive at the ranch at 11am the day before your scheduled hunt. You will need to call our guides Mike Slifer 907-738-1394 or Linda Slifer 907-738-1393. They will tell you information about your hunt, help familiarize you with the ranch, and take you to your hunting area.

  • What does the hunt I purchased entitle me to harvest?

Deer Hunters your hunt includes one buck and one doe. This is not an “Any Buck Hunt”! We ask that you not shoot anything less than a mature 3-year-old buck. Our expert guides will explain to you how to recognize a mature buck. We strive to nurture our young bucks so they can grow to be desirable trophies that our hunters will be proud to harvest.

Turkey Hunters may harvest two mature gobblers (not jakes).

  • What distance do I need to be able to shoot to harvest my deer?

The distance could be a little as 50 yards or as much as 300 yards. The average shot is usually around 200 yards. You will be hunting from either an enclosed stand, a tripod, a pop-up, or a ground blind. There are absolutely NO spot and stalk hunts allowed. This spoils the hunting area for you and for future hunters.

  • What type of blinds are used on the ranch?

We provide a combination of tripods and enclosed stands to offer you the best chance for success on your hunt. Enclosed blinds, tripods, ground blinds, and popups are all used on the ranch.

  • What can I expect the weather to be like during my hunt?

The weather is usually moderate ranging in the 50’s, but there can be exceptionally hot or cold days. Layers of clothing work best to adapt to heat or cold. Rain or snow is always a possibility, so bring rain gear and waterproof boots. The boots will be necessary for wet ground or in case you must cross the river. There are NO orange clothing requirements for hunters in Texas. Most hunters wear camouflage.

  • Is there a meat processor in Wellington to process my deer?

When you harvest your deer, our guides will retrieve and field dress it. After it is field dressed, they will take it to Wellington to the processor. A & K Processors has many years of experience taking care of hunters’ needs. They may be reached at 806-447-5660 if you have questions.

  • What about tipping the guides?

Our guides work very hard to help you to have a successful hunting experience. Tips are not mandatory, but they certainly make the guides feel that you appreciate what they have done for you.
